报告题目:Enquiry-Based Education as a Catalyst for PhD Research: Investigating Heavy Metals in School Sharks

内容摘要:The integration of enquiry-based learning (EBL) and research-based learning (RBL) into undergraduate chemistry education can lead to meaningful, real-world research initiatives. This seminar presents how a curriculum designed with integration of EBL and RBL in mind directly inspired a study investigating heavy metal contamination in school sharks (Galeorhinus galeus). The first part of the talk will outline the curriculum structure, highlighting how students engaged with diverse analytical techniques and demonstrated both strong self-awareness of their learning and confidence in applying laboratory methods, as evidenced by student survey results. The second part will focus on preliminary findings from the school shark study, where heavy metal concentrations were measured in pregnant females and their embryos. Contrary to what is often theorized in the literature, our results showed no evidence of maternal offloading of heavy metals to embryos. This work underscores the potential of curriculum-integrated enquiry-based learning to foster significant scientific research while empowering students with critical laboratory skills.

报告题目:Rational Catalyst Design for CO2Electrochemical Reduction Reaction

内容摘要Electrochemical CO2reduction (CO2RR) offers a promising route for converting CO2into valuable chemicals and fuels using renewable electricity. However, significant challenges remain in terms of product selectivity, energy efficiency, and long-term stability, particularly when using industrially-relevant CO2sources. This talk will present recent advancements in CO2RR, drawing from several cutting-edge studies that address these challenges from multiple angles. By integrating insights from catalyst development, reaction mechanisms, and electrolyser engineering, this work demonstrates significant progress towards making CO2electrolysis a viable technology for large-scale carbon utilization and renewable fuel production.

报告题目:Controlling Skyrmions in Cu2OSeO3through Doping; an insight to the relationship between crystal structure and magnetic ordering

内容摘要:Magnetic Skyrmion lattices (SkL) are topologically protected spin ordering due to their quantised winding number. This, along with other helimagnetic orderings offer a plethora of fascinating phenomena for fundamental research and applications. Cu2OSeO3 is an insulating multiferroic material that has shown to host SkL at specific conditions.Through neutron diffraction, we found that the magnetic response of the spin ordering is highly susceptible to chemical doping. This implies that the rigidity of the spin coupling might be affected by both magnetic and non-magnetic dopants. We also studied whether doping changed the universality class through magnetometry. These results give us insight as to the relationship between materials structure and magnetic ordering. This highlights the importance of the crystal structure and an avenue to design novel spintronic materials.

Rosalyn completed her MChem degree at the University of Oxford and PhD in Synthetic Chemistry at the University of Bristol. She then undertook postdoctoral positions at the University of Edinburgh and the CNRS (Lyon, France). Her research focuses on synthesising catalysts featuring earth abundant metals to understand and control their reactivity. This is achieved by studying their reactivity in solution and when attached to solid supports using Surface Organometallic Chemistry techniques. In 2022, Rosalyn was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Postdoctoral Fellowship to conduct research at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Rosalyn joined the School of Chemical Sciences at the University of Auckland as a lecturer in 2024.

报告题目:Building Catalysts on Solid Supports: Controlling and Enhancing Reactivity with Surface Organometallic Chemistry

内容摘要:Surface organometallic chemistry combines the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts by attaching well-defined organometallic complexes onto solid supports such as silica. A key aspect of surface organometallic chemistry is the ability to isolate the metal centres from one another. This prevents deactivating multimolecular processes such as ligand exchange or dimer and cluster formation. Consequently, species with very high reactivity can be isolated on solid supports and studied. Here, I will discuss using traditional surface organometallic chemistry techniques to enhance the reactivity of heterobimetallic Ta/Ir catalysts in C–H activation. The application of more modern surface organometallic chemistry techniques that fully control the metal coordination sphere will be discussed.

报告题目:High Efficient Organic Solar-Thermal Materials for Water-Electric Cogeneration

内容摘要:Organic photothermal materials have attracted intensive attention for their potential applications in solar-driven water evaporation and thermoelectric power generation. According to the Jablonski diagram, the light energy caught by a chromophore often prompts electron transition process from the ground state to the lowest excited state and sequentially, the excited state molecule will rapidly drop back to the ground state through both radiative and non-radiative decays. The non-radiative decay, which refers to an energy dissipation process accompanying the generation of heat energy, has fascinated scientists as a powerful approach for solar-thermal applications. Therefore, constructing molecules with narrow band gap and strong non-radiative transition ability is a vital task for the development of high performance solar-thermal conversion materials. Therefore, we designed and synthesized solar-thermal materials based on donor-acceptor type molecules, polycyclicπ-conjugated molecules, organic radicals molecules, further explained the mechanism of photothermal conversion, and applied to the field of water-electric cogeneration.

报告题目:Decarboxylative cross-coupling via ligand-to-metal energy transfer photoexcitation of Ti(IV) carboxylates

内容摘要:Photocatalytic decarboxylation of carboxylic acids enables the high-efficiency synthesis of complex molecules, which has now become a hot research topic. In this talk, we use non-toxic titanium metal as a photosensitiser, and pioneeringly propose an inner-sphere ligand-metal energy transfer (LMET) activation strategy to achieve a sterically maintained decarboxylation reaction to obtain the key intermediate carbon-titanium bond, which then undergoes bimetallic relay catalysis to achieve a sterically retained cross-coupling. Mechanistic studies indicate that the activated decarboxylation by LMET strategy can stereospecific access to carbon-titanium species, and the carbon-titanium bond can be further converted into radicals and titanium(III). This study establishes a new mechanism of photocatalytic decarboxylation, which provides a new concept and method for enriching carboxylic acid conversion.
